Click here to read how. Berk One year after the events of the previous film, Hiccup continues to rescue dragons with his fellow Dragon Riders and friends. Even though he has fulfilled his dream of creating a utopia where humans and dragons live together, Hiccup still tries to save dragons and bring them to Berk while dreaming of finding the mythical 'Hidden World', a safe haven for dragons his late father Stoick told him about. Unfortunately, his efforts have also resulted in the island becoming severely overpopulated with dragons. Meanwhile, a white female Night Fury-like dragon, held captive by the Warlords, is given to the famed dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly as bait for him to capture Toothless for the Warlords' use as an Alpha. Toothless when he sees the Light fury Toothless discovers the female Fury dubbed a "Light Fury" by Astrid in the woods around Berk, the two quickly becoming enchanted with each other; yet, the Light Fury senses Hiccup's presence him having followed Toothless and flees. Hiccup and Tuffnut later discover Grimmel's dragon traps in the woods. Grimmel visits Hiccup that night, but the latter has prepared an ambush to capture him; Grimmel manages to escape, burning Hiccup's house and many others in the process. Hiccup rallies Berk's citizens and dragons to leave Berk on a quest to find the Hidden World. Mid-journey, the Berkians discover an island which they initially plan to rest on; soon, though, they decide to settle there, even if only temporarily. Seeing Toothless' inability to fly solo hindering his growing relationship with the Light Fury, Hiccup builds him an automatic tail. Upon receiving the tail, Toothless flies off, meeting the Light Fury on his own and flying with her to an unknown land. Valka, on a scouting patrol, notices Grimmel's approaching army, quickly reporting back to warn Hiccup. Hiccup and the Dragon Riders head to capture Grimmel; yet, they fall into his trap, barely escaping. Ruffnut, however, is captured but irritates Grimmel until he lets her go. Unknown to Ruffnut, she has accidentally revealed the Berkians' new location and Grimmel secretly follows her. Toothless and the Light Fury in the Hidden World Hiccup and Astrid search for Toothless, finding the Hidden World and seeing Toothless and the Light Fury leading the dragons there as Alphas and mates. However, the two are soon discovered, Toothless being forced to leave and take Hiccup and Astrid back to the Berkians. Hiccup realizes his people wouldn't be safe living with dragons in the Hidden World, and moreover, have no business intruding upon the dragons' home. Suddenly, Grimmel, having followed Ruffnut, appears and captures Toothless and the Light Fury. Hiccup and the Gang going to free the dragons With Astrid's encouragement, Hiccup sets out with the Dragon Riders to stop Grimmel and his army and save Toothless, the Light Fury, and all the captured dragons. Gliding in on wingsuits, the group catch Grimmel's army off-guard, igniting a massive battle. Hiccup frees Toothless, while Grimmel drugs the Light Fury into obeying him. Hiccup and Toothless give chase; after a heated aerial duel, Grimmel tranquilizes Toothless midair. Hiccup, realizing he cannot save Toothless by himself, frees the Light Fury instead and asks her to save Toothless. Hiccup and Grimmel plummet to the sea with Hiccup fully accepting that this may be his end. The Light Fury, however, unexpectedly returns to save Hiccup, while allowing Grimmel to fall to his death. Toothless Leaving Hiccup The battle being over, back on the island, Hiccup fully realizes that the dragons will likely never be safe in the human world and that the Hidden World is where they truly belong. With great sadness, Hiccup and Toothless bid farewell to each other as all of the Berkians set their dragons free. Toothless and the Light Fury then lead the dragons to the Hidden World. Months later, Hiccup and Astrid get married as the Berkians settle permanently onto their new island. Afterwards, Hiccup, Astrid, Valka, Gobber, Eret, Tuffnut, Ruffnut, Snotlout, and Fishlegs stand at the edge of the cliff looking off towards the Hidden World wishing their dragons were there. Years later Hiccup, Astrid and their two children, Zephyr and Nuffink, sail across the sea to visit Toothless, the Light Fury, their three offspring and Stormfly at the edge of the Hidden World; Hiccup vows that until mankind can coexist peacefully with dragons, the dragons will stay hidden while the Berkians guard their secret. On April 1, 2017, Rotoscopers posted an article saying that the 3rd movie was being split into two movies; the second of which was due out in 2020; however, this was an April Fools prank, as stated behind the "Original Source" link at the bottom of the article. It fooled millions; however, and even IMDb launched a page for "How to Train Your Dragon 3, Part 2" until informed fans had it taken down. On April 17, 2018, the title How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World was confirmed. The film's theatrical showing is preceded by two original DreamWorks Animation shorts, Bilby and Bird Karma. Due to the recent sale to NBC Universal, DreamWorks Animation took a year and a half hiatus through 2018 to reorganize. The company's first film once they were back in commission was How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World.[2] Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera are the lead voice actors in the film.[3] The line at the beginning of the trailer and Hiccup's closing narration, "There were dragons when I was a boy." is a reference to how the How to Train Your Dragon books started and ended. On January 2, 2019, it was confirmed that Justin Rupple is replacing Miller as the voice actor of Tuffnut Thorston.[4] The film was first released on January 3, 2019 in Australia and New Zealand, mid-January in the Netherlands, February 1, 2019 in the and February 22, 2019 in the At the end of the film, as they are going their separate ways, Hiccup touches Toothless' snout in the exact same way he did at their first meeting. According to Dean DeBlois, giving a subtitle to the film is an idea from Universal's marketing; however, he himself sees the film as a "3".[5] According to Dean DeBlois, about ten years had passed between the goodbye scene and the epilogue.[6] During Hiccup and Astrid's wedding, a image of Toothless can be seen and it is the same image from the poster of the first How to Train Your Dragon film. This is the only film where Hiccup doesn't say the first line "This is Berk". This is also the only film where the line "we have Dragons" isn't spoken at the end. Errors When Barf and Belch make their first appearance, their "fires" are switched Belch emits the gas while Barf ignites it with sparks. As the Dragon Riders fly around Berk, some of the dragons in the background are frozen. In the Great Hall while everyone is eating, Toothless is wearing his saddle, but when he growls at a Hobgobbler soaking in a cauldron of soup, the saddle and all its attachments are suddenly gone. In Hiccup's house when Astrid joins the ambush on Grimmel, she pushes aside a curtain to reveal herself. A moment later when the Deathgrippers attack, we see Astrid looking behind herself, and then in a wider camera shot she jumps to the floor, in which the curtain is gone. Right after Toothless returns Hiccup to New Berk after escaping the Hidden World, Hiccup looks up at some buildings under construction on a hilltop. At the end of the same scene, right after Grimmel abducts Toothless and the Light Fury, the same buildings are seen again in the background, but finished. In the very first glimpse of the wedding, Astrid's Mother has brown hair, but her hair is blonde in all closer shots. Awards and Nominations References ↠How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World. Moments pages are Spoilers Off. You Have Been The opening rescue on the dragon trapper ship, with the Dragon Riders swooping in with suits made of dragon scales to walk through fire. During his first appearance, Grimmel shoots a Rumblehorn rushing on him with a Deathgripper poison dart without breaking a sweat. Hiccup surprising Grimmel by a trap when the latter ambushes him. Unfortunately, Grimmel has planned for this by having Deathgrippers as backup, giving him a moment of awesome of his own. Minor moment to Cloudjumper when he takes on two Deathgrippers while rescuing Valka. The escape sequence when the gang tries to kidnap Grimmel and he traps them. Special mention goes to Valka commanding Cloudjumper with her staff to raise the chain barricade allowing them to escape. That dragon surely is strong. Astrid also gets one when one of the Deathgrippers gets its tail stuck in the stone wall. She leaps out of the crack it made while trying to strike her, swings on its tail, and staggers the dragon by kicking its face. The Hidden World is made of this. The designers must have poured half their budget into the scenes. A primordial world with incredible but almost alien ecosystem and filled with dozens upon dozens of dragon species. It feels like the Hidden World is inspired by classic tales such as the The Lost World or King Kong 1933. Toothless's main introduction at the Hidden World. In just a short time span, he has become a patriarch of sorts among these dragons. Our little dragon has come this far. This is further enhanced by the beautiful score from John Now that's a king. The Final Battle is one last swan song for our Defenders of Berk and they deliver. The Dragon Riders, using their glide suits, swoop in to save their dragons. Bonus points to Hiccup for knocking Grimmel down on his keister. After the last two movies of them not fighting together, Hiccup and Astrid finally get that Battle Couple moment when she's close to getting overpowered by one of Grimmel's soldiers, Hiccup needs no more than give her a brief warning before cutting a part of a beam to knock him overboard. Astrid then repays similarly, knocking out another soldier coming behind Hiccup with her mallet. Especially awesome if you've watched the series. We've seen the two of them mainly fighting alongside each other on their dragons— now, we're seeing them fighting human enemies back-to-back! Fishlegs fights off the dragon trappers to protect his friends. When he got hit, he gets assistance from the Crimson Goregutter. Astrid steering on of the ships and blocking the helm with her axe so it crashes into another ship. Stuff Blowing Up ensues. When Tuffnut loses his goatee, he goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, chasing after his terrified foes. Gobber fights one of the Warlords and ends it by bringing in a swarm Hobgobblers to presumably devour him alive. The entire sequence of Hiccup chasing Grimmel on his platform flown by Deathgrippers as the latter slowly falls apart. Toothless using his lightning powers to take out all four Deathgrippers that were on top of him. Hiccup's final defeat of Grimmel. He frees the Light Fury and encourages her to save a tranquilized Toothless, then throws both himself and Grimmel into free fall. Hiccup seems poised to make a Heroic Sacrifice, but it turns out that he'd guessed that his act of kindness would convince the Light Fury to return and rescue him, and sure enough, she does. At this point, Grimmel is left hanging onto Hiccup's prosthetic leg, which Hiccup removes, sending Grimmel plummeting to his doom. The animation in this film is breathtaking and blows the previous two films' animation out of the water.
This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unforgivably bad. I've been a fan of HTTYD for years, and they abandoned every last scrap of the series' heart, integrity, and purpose for a glossy and oversaturated Disney rip-off that can't hold the plot together to save its life. Characters behave in whatever way Dean DeBlois requires them to with scant regard for their characterization five minutes in either direction, let alone the past two movies. Plot holes fly fast and thick. Loyal, confident, snarky Toothless has been reduced to a literal slobbering pet, Astrid the inexplicably jealous girlfriend who chastises Hiccup for expecting Toothless to ever come home, Valka an airbrushed-free-of-wrinkles Barbie who dispenses advice on how to be a supportive woman. The Light Fury, our love interest and Toothless's "call to the wild", couldn't be more of a non-character if she tried. Soft and round as playdoh and covered with pink sparkles and heart motifs, the film's crew is unapologetically open about the fact that she only exists to be "feminine and graceful" and offer Toothless "the promise of propagation" despite being an entirely different species. Everything about Toothless seems to disgust her on a visceral level, yet we're supposed to support Toothless when he commands his entire flock of dragons - down to the last hatchling - into hunters' cages when she's held hostage. She's never even given a threats aren't threatening, the characters are shallow and mean-spirited, and the titular Hidden World is barely shown. The villain is a bleached out Snow Miser who succeeds in harming no one; his mind-controlled Deathgripper dragons look scary and thus we're not supposed to care when Toothless murders them for being under the sway of the same chemical as his new girlfriend. The warlords are incompetent boobs and the armada of thousands goes down without a single casualty. And I could forgive all of that, every last bit, if not for the film's reprehensible Aesop; that all the things it preached to us in previous films were actually childish, selfish, and naive. Friendship means little to nothing, different people need to be segregated for their own safety, and your dream of making the world slightly better is stupid. Just sit down and have on you, Dean all o… Expand
“ Stoick "Out there, beyond the sunset, lies the home of the dragons. Legends tell of ships that sailed too close to it, only to drop off the edge of the world, never to be seen again. But those sailors who turned back told tales of a great waterfall and dragons guarding the entrance to a Hidden World." Hiccup "Whoa." Stoick "Not just a nest, Hiccup, but a land from which all dragons come."[src] † — Stoick telling Hiccup about the Hidden World  The Hidden World is the major and titular location of How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World. It is the ancestral home of all dragons. Official Description[] “ The Hidden World is an old sea-faring legend about a land at the edge of the world, where many sailors have lost their ships — never to be seen again. Those who have returned reported sightings of a great waterfall and dragons guarding the entrance to a hidden world beneath the sea. A land from which all dragons hail. [src] † — Dean DeBlois  Development[] “ We wanted something that transcended the idea of a cave. Part of that was delving into bioluminescence and was of channeling light into this subterranean space with the use of crystals that could carry light from magma. We wanted it to be an exotic world that still feels like it belongs here on earth. But it's still a place for dragons and not for humans. [src] † — Dean DeBlois  Geography[] The caldera entrance to the Hidden World in the sea of the Barbaric Archipelago. The Hidden World is set within a massive volcanic caldera, which serves as a portal to an endless maze of chambers and volcanic tubes that wind their way around the world.[1] This subterranean world is filled with bioluminescent fungi, coral, and bright, scintillating crystals that adorn the vast cavernous spaces and antechambers.[1] Water seeps through cracks in the earth's crust to form waterfalls and collects in pools on coral shelves. Water that reaches the caldera's floor is heated by magma and turned into steam, creating a tropical environment. The newly formed Kullersen Fissure in North America. A new entrance to the Hidden World was created in the twenty-first century when a massive comet passed through Earth's atmosphere, causing an enormous geologic rift known as the Kullersen Fissure on the North American continent. The Fissure is home to a number of interconnected cave systems, some of which lead to the Hidden World's "Crystal Realm" section. Notable Places Assorted by Media[] The Art of How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World[] The Caldera[] Mushroom Forest[] “ After a dragon has entered the Hidden World through the Caldera they get access to a network of caves deep in the crust of the earth. After a dragon flies through this network they reach the Mushroom Forest, where the Hidden World's bioluminescence is revealed. The Mushroom Forest mainly gives home to many stalactites and stalagmites that are completely overgrown with various sorts of mushrooms. † — The Art of How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World  King Island[] “ At the center point of the Hidden World lies King Island, which serves as the throne room for the king of dragons. The throne for the Alpha is a gigantic crystal on the island, looking over a large part of the Hidden World. † — The Art of How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World  School of Dragons[] Hidden World Annex[] “ In the darkest depths lies the unknown and it is up to Vikings to explore it! Very few Vikings have been valiant enough to venture into its depths, but those few who have get to witness the light and bioluminescent found within. As dragons seem to take a shine to these underground caves and brightly glow throughout them. [src] † — School of Dragons  Hidden World Caverns[] “ After the discovery of Hobgobblers, Vikings have been fascinated in learning more of these incredible dragons that has led many to visit their beautiful home. Hobgobblers appear to be small, fierce, powerful dragons but they are rather mischievous in their own way, perfectly resembling the area in which they live; full of mystery and hidden surprises!Vikings can expect these inner caves of the Hidden World to be composed of massive crystal-like structures and have numerous corals running along the open tunnels and like the Annex, a unique touch of gleaming lights can be seen all around. Vikings venturing inside will be left amazed as they watch their dragon light up inside the tunnels. It is indeed as astonishing as it sounds and perhaps that is the reason why these dragons seem to have kept the caverns hidden away from Vikings for quite a while. The caves are full of hidden mazes and tunnels that are sure to test the clever mind of a Viking, and once inside the area reveals beauty unlike anything we've seen before! [src] † — School of Dragons  Dragons The Nine Realms[] Crystal Realm[] The Crystal Realm is a section of the Hidden World that appears to be located beneath the North American continent. When the Kullersen Fissure was opened in the twenty-first century, it opened a direct path to the Crystal Realm, which is easily accessible via various smaller caves within the Fissure. As the name implies, this realm contains many large and intricate crystalline structures connected by a network of caves and crevices. Some of these crevices have been shown to contain significant amounts of water, including underground lakes teeming with aquatic organisms like fish and bioluminescent algae. Underground lakes in the Crystal Realm are stable habitats for Tidal Class dragons like Mist Twisters and Flood Fangs due to their size and abundant food sources. Some sections of the Crystal realm contain uniform crystal formations, such as a maze-like area populated with towering pillars of translucent and mirror-like crystals embedded with veins of silver. The densely packed crystal structures form a large maze with numerous narrow paths and dead ends, making this area extremely difficult to navigate. The silver veins also act as organic lightning rods, absorbing electrical currents and negatively affecting dragons with electrical abilities in combat. Dark Realm[] The Dark Realm, also known as the Dark Valley, is a dark and dreary section of the Hidden World, the most barren area of the rift with few sources of water aside from isolated watering holes. While the ground is mostly sand, the Dark Realm possesses towering crystal hills and mountains which are home to many dragons, particularly Flightmares, Dramillions, and Spiderwings. The area above the Dark Valley also contains large amounts of gaseous vapor, which resembles a clouded sky, and even contains its own weather patterns. These vapors can also be ignited by sources of intense heat, namely a dragon’s fire. Some dragons, such as the Razorwhip, have used this to their advantage when in battle, utilizing the vapors to create fiery tornadoes against their enemies. The disquiet of this region inspires thoughts of the Viking underworld, Helheim. Some areas are humid enough to allow moss to flourish, similar to the Bio Realm. Although there are never enough resources to allow large plants to grow, there are small patches of sweet smelling white flowers that add beauty to the realm at the time luring unsuspecting prey.[2] Fire Realm[] The Fire Realm is essentially a vast lava field strewn with rock formations of all shapes and sizes, from towering pillars to long arches and lumpy bridges. Due to its high, sweltering temperatures and harsh environment, the Fire Realm is one of the most dangerous regions of the Hidden World. It is an extremely difficult place for humans to navigate safely, necessitating the use of fireproof clothing to protect them from the intense heat. Despite its harsh environment, the Fire Realm is home to a diverse range of wildlife, such as seaweed-like plants, fanged snakes, giant snails, and pufferfish-like lava-dwelling creatures. Dragons inhabiting this realm, such as Catastrophic Quakens, will frequently construct their nests in large, bowl-shaped rock formations. Ice Realm[] The Ice Realm possesses a constantly cold environment, with blizzards occurring regularly and its landscape being almost entirely snow-covered with several large ice-structures scattered throughout it. Overlooking the Ice Realm are large rocky mountains with snowy peaks, while shinning at its highest points is a sparkling Aurora Borealis. In addition, despite being located deep underground and cut off from the light of the sun, the Ice Realm contains healthy amounts of vegetation thanks to the warmer temperatures generated by the unique crystals the dragons heat with their flames. Nature Realm[] The Nature Realm is a vast lush realm with vegetation and large trees and canopies with large cliffs which make suitable nesting places for many different species of dragons such as Snifflehides and Vine Tails. However, some of the plant species in the Nature Realm are carnivorous, and will often attack unsuspecting Dragons by utilizing thick vines which can wrap around and immobilize them, before pulling them closer to the plants’ mouths for dining. In addition, these plants are also immune to Dragon fire and other attacks making them highly dangerous to dragons not native to the Nature Realm, who don't know their biology. Giant Realm[] [] Bio Realm[] The Bio realm is cavernous with processed bioluminescent mushrooms, crystals and other plants which can serve as light. The crystals live in symbosis with the resident fauna, slowly absorbing excess energy created by dragons like Night Lights and Skrills. Also present are large amounts of salts, minerals, and nutrients, filtered down by the water below. This has nabled many surface-dwelling trees to extend their roots deep down into the rift.[3] However it also possesses booby traps most likely set by Hiccup and Astrid, 1,300 years ago to keep humans out of the King's Realm. King's Realm[] The King's Realm is vast mountainous realm with large mountains and cliffs with red mushroom's growing on them. There are also a number of caves for shelter. So far the only residents in this realm are Thunder's family. Previous inaccessible to most living creatures, the lush and colorful King's Realm was exposed during the opening of the rift. Filled with clusters of crystals bursting with ancient energy alike, their abundance makes this the most appealing space of all the realms. These desirable conditions have caused a steady migration of dragons that come to the King's Realm in search of a new home. More than any other, this realm represents hope for the future of all dragons because it serves as a perfect environment thanks to its ideal balance of vegetation, water and rock strata.[4] Appearances[] How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World[] Stoick the Vast believed that the Hidden World is a location where all dragons come from and planned to seal it off to stop the constant fighting between humans and dragons. Hiccup confided in Astrid about thinking of finding the Hidden World so that everyone in their tribe could live in peace amongst the dragons, and then told the Berkians that they would attempt to find it and relocate there. The Light Fury was hatched in the Hidden World but eventually made her way to the surface, where she was captured shortly before the film's events. Upon being freed, she led Toothless back to her home, where the resident dragons then paid honor to their new Alpha. Hiccup and Astrid eventually find the caldera while searching for Toothless, but they are chased out by the resident dragons, prompting Hiccup to realize that humans would never be welcome in the Hidden World. It was a place for dragons only. Following Grimmel the Grisly's death and the Warlords' defeat, Hiccup and the rest of the tribe decided to send all of their dragons to the Hidden World, where no human would ever find and harm them. A decade later, Hiccup and Astrid take their two children, Zephyr and Nuffink, to the entrance of the Hidden World, where they encounter Toothless, the Light Fury, the Night Light hatchlings, and Stormfly. The fact that the family travels there by boat suggests that the Hidden World is not far from New Berk. Dragons The Nine Realms[] Season 1[] Tom Kullersen and Thunder discovering the Crystal Realm within the Kullersen Fissure. Dragons have become mere legends in modern times, until a comet nearly collides with Earth, causing a massive tectonic upheaval that creates an enormous, mysterious fissure. Scientists come from around the world and build a state-of-the-art research facility, including the parents of Thomas "Tom" Kullersen, Jun Wong, D'Angelo Baker and Alexandra "Alex" Gonzalez who were taken there by their parents, creating Project International Crevasse and Research Investigation Station. Tom would eventually venture into the Kullersen Fissure, where he would meet a Night Light dragon he later named Thunder. After the two bond, they discover a passage to the Hidden World, an underground realm where all the dragons have been hiding for years. Throughout the series, Tom forms a secret group of dragon riders called the Dragon Club with Jun, D'Angelo, and Alex, who have all bonded with dragons of their own, to protect humans and the secret of the Hidden World from those who would misuse the dragons. Season 2[] The Dragon Club's adventures in the Hidden World continue as they discover new caverns and dragons while keeping the secret. There are numerous large chambers and tunnels filled with bodies of water, sand, magma, stalactites, and stalagmites, as well as crystals and crystal-like structures. A vast cavern dubbed the "Crystal Realm" full of warm yellow and golden crystal structures; a vast high-domed area with a sea-like body of water and small sandy crystal islands; another area with such high ceilings that it almost appears to have its own sky; and an area with a labyrinthine forest of tall clear crystals with veins of silver are among the discrete areas where the Dragon Club travels. As they continue to explore, the gang learns that Tom is descended from Vikings and has a strange connection to the Hidden World. After defeating Thunder's Skrill nemesis, they discovered that another massive chamber of the Hidden World had opened. They also discover an ancient Viking spearhead emblazoned with the Night Fury Strike Class symbol, which matches the symbol on Tom's Viking helmet, alerting the group to the fact that they were not the only ones who ventured into the depths of the Hidden World. Season 3[] After discovering the spearhead, the club explores the newest area the Fire Realm with blazing temperatures, boiling lava and discover once again new dragons. However, while exploring for new clues the group finds it even harder to keep the dragons secret. Such as when it came to the club's newest members Jun's brother Eugene who snuck his way into the Dragon's Lair and the others hesitantly allow him to their ranks but while looking for a dragon the group found that the Crystal Realm was under attack by aggressive dragons from the new realm but thanks to Eugene and his new dragon Webmaster they won the battle but the war was far from over. The group shockingly discovers that the Flamethrower dragons they've been fighting against were only scouts for an even bigger dragon the dangerous Sky Torcher. Needing help to fight against them and save the Crystal Realm, Tom decided to face his fears along with Jun they ventured to bottom of the Fissure to look for the Fault Ripper dragon finding the beast alive he asked it's for help but meeting again Tom had discovered that the dragon is just like him scarred and afraid from their last encounter. Truly understanding the dragon he repented his actions from before and began to bond with Fault Ripper's help the club drove the Sky Torcher and it's minions back to the Fire Realm and seal off the passage. As a reward, from the Fault Ripper his roar locked another cavern that held a mysterious canister that too had donned the Night Fury symbol bringing the team one step closer to figuring out Tom's past. Season 4[] After defeating the Sky Torcher, the Dragon Riders work to keep the Flame Throwers out of the Crystal Realm and in the Fire Realm. They also discover Buzzsaw in the Ice Realm, whom attempts to capture Thunder and kill his rider which he is unsuccessful. However it doesn't stop him from luring dragons like Snowtails and Terrible Terrors into makeshift cages, trapping them and revealing he trained a Timberjack. Tom foils Buzzsaw's plans and the riders rescue the other dragons from the traps which makes Buzzsaw another threat the rider have to defend the Hidden World against. During their trek, Tom had discovered that he already had the key to the canister his viking helmet by using its horn. Tom opened it to discover a book with the same symbol. As Tom and Thunder search for Buzzsaw near the end of the season, they discover Shadow who turns out to be Thunder's little brother. Shadow leads the riders to the Bio Realm of the Hidden World where they discover booby traps most likely set by Astrid and Hiccup 1,300 years ago. The trail leads them to discover the King's Realm - the new home of Thunder's family. However, they must defend them when predatory Snow Wraiths invade and tries to hunt Thunder's family. Working with the Night Light Elder, Tom and Thunder defeat the Snow Wraiths and force them back into the Ice Realm. Afterwards the Night Light Elder allows Thunder to stay with Tom. On their way back to the Dragons' Lair, Tom and Thunder fly ahead of everyone and get there first, only to discover Tom's mother, Olivia, had discovered the lair and now knows about the secret Tom and his friends have been keeping. Season 5[] When Olivia discovered the secret, she had a hard time accepting it but slowly began to understand why Tom had lied and the bond her son and his friends had with their dragons regardless their adventures. They continued on their efforts after the Flamethrowers were saved from Buzzsaw and reunited them with their alpha Sky Torcher. In the process, the Dragon Club discovered a new realm the Nature Realm. However as they explore deeper into the Hidden World below, Olivia had a hard time keeping the secret up above, making Tom aware that the secret they hide won't be hidden much longer with people getting closer to the dragons. Rakke Town was put into a deep freeze with normal ways of keeping the town alive out of commotion. The Dragon Club are forced to call upon their dragons and try to do so undetected, but because of Sledkin, the secret gets out in the form a daring rescue mission where the Dragon Club saves Olivia and Chief Baker and introduces the town their dragons and urges them to keep them secret. Season 6[] Games[] School of Dragons[] The Hidden World appears in "The Hidden World" expansion for School of Dragons. A section known as the "Hidden World Annex" can be found on the School of Dragons Island as part of this pack. Later, in the "Curse of the Hobgobbler" expansion, another entrance in New Berk is revealed, containing a Hobgobbler nest. Trivia[] The Hidden World is a famous myth/legend from the distant seas. It is sometimes called "a world beyond the sunset".[5] The Hidden World appears to be an incredibly ancient location due to how massive the stalagmites and stalactites are. According to the growth rate of these formations, it could take up to a few million years for them to reach the sizes depicted in the film. The entrance to the Hidden World appears similar to that of the Bermuda Triangle since it is a great hole in the sea with fountains of water pouring into it. Dean DeBlois first imagined the Hidden World in a dream as a hole in the sea.[5][6] Hiccup and Astrid are the only known Vikings to have ventured in and out of the Hidden World. However, in "Follow the Lightning, Part 2", it was confirmed that other Vikings visited the Hidden World between the events of the third film and the Nine Realms. According to Simon Otto, more than 65,000 dragons reside in the Hidden World.[7] According to Brad Lewis, New Berk is supposed to be the mirror image of the Hidden World. Despite never hearing about its legends, Tom Kullersen coincidentally calls the Hidden World by its actual name upon first discovering it. The different sections of the Hidden World seem to draw some inspiration from the Nine Realms of Norse Mythology. The "Fire Realm" draws reference to Muspelheim, the realm of fire and lava, and domain of the fire giants. The "Dark Realm" seems to be based on the realm of Helheim, the Norse afterlife for those who died from natural causes or uneventful deaths. The “Ice Realm†draws parallels to Niflheim, the coldest realm of ice and snow. According to Olivia Kullersen, many of the minerals and crystals found in the Hidden World contain a molecular structure far different from those discovered by humans. References[] ↠DeBlois, Dean.
